French grammar explained

Visiter vs rendre visite: how do you say “visit” in French?

English uses one verb for visiting Paris, a museum, a friend or a website. Everyday French does not. The noun that follows—usually a place or a person—determines the natural structure.

Quick answer: use visiter + place: visiter Paris, visiter un musée. Use rendre visite à + person: rendre visite à mes parents. In informal conversation, aller voir quelqu’un is also very common. For a website, say consulter un site or aller sur un site, depending on what you mean.

What is the difference between visiter and rendre visite?

visiter + placeExplore, tour, inspect or look around a place directly, with no preposition.
rendre visite à + personGo to see and spend time with a person; the person follows à.
What are you visiting?Usual FrenchExampleNatural English
A city or countryvisiterNous visitons Lyon. We’re visiting Lyon.
A site or buildingvisiterIls visitent le château. They’re touring the château.
A friend or relativerendre visite àJe rends visite à ma tante.I’m visiting my aunt.
A person, in everyday speechaller voirOn va voir Paul. We’re going to see Paul.

The key distinction is not movement versus staying. It is the type of complement. Standard everyday French normally uses visiter for a place and rendre visite à or aller voir for a person.

How do you use visiter for places?

Visiter takes its place directly. Do not add à between the verb and the place.

Nous avons visité le musée d’Orsay.

We visited the Musée d’Orsay.

Elle aimerait visiter la Bretagne au printemps.

She would like to visit Brittany in spring.

You can visit a city, a region, a monument, a museum, an exhibition, an apartment, a factory or other premises. The meaning may range from touring to inspecting, but the place remains the direct complement.

Natural patternExampleWhat it means
visiter une villeNous visitons Strasbourg.explore a city
visiter un monumentTu as visité la cathédrale ?tour a site
visiter un appartementJe visite un appartement demain.view a property
visiter une entrepriseLes étudiants ont visité l’usine.tour the premises

Avoid: Nous avons visité à Marseille.
Use: Nous avons visité Marseille.

How do you use rendre visite à for people?

Rendre visite à quelqu’un is a fixed expression meaning to go and see someone, usually with the idea of spending some time with them. Conjugate rendre; visite remains a singular noun.

Je vais rendre visite à mes grands-parents ce week-end.

I’m going to visit my grandparents this weekend.

Elle lui rend visite tous les mois.

She visits him or her every month.

Because the person follows à, use an indirect object pronoun: me, te, lui, nous, vous, leur.

With a named personWith a pronounEnglish
Je rends visite à Léa.Je lui rends visite.I visit Léa / her.
Nous rendons visite à nos voisins.Nous leur rendons visite. We visit our neighbours / them.
Ils nous rendent visite.—They visit us.

Do not translate “visit her” as la rendre visite. The correct pronoun is lui: Je lui rends visite.

What is the difference between rendre visite and aller voir?

Both can describe a social visit. Aller voir quelqu’un is extremely common in everyday conversation and can sound more neutral. Rendre visite à quelqu’un makes the visit itself more explicit and can sound slightly more deliberate.

Je vais voir Camille après le travail.

I’m going to see Camille after work.

Nous lui avons rendu visite à l’hôpital.

We visited him or her in hospital.

Voir quelqu’un alone is broader: it may mean meeting, seeing, dating or consulting someone, not necessarily visiting their home. Context decides: Je vois le médecin demain means “I’m seeing the doctor tomorrow.”

Can visiter take a person? Yes, but not usually for an ordinary social visit in standard contemporary French. It survives in specialised uses such as a doctor visiting patients, official or charitable visits, and in some regional varieties of French. Adult learners will sound more natural using rendre visite à or aller voir for friends and relatives.

How do you translate other uses of English “visit”?

English extends “visit” to websites, doctors and brief stops. French often uses a verb that describes the action more precisely.

EnglishNatural FrenchExample
visit a websiteconsulter un site / aller sur un siteConsultez notre site pour les horaires.
visit a doctoraller chez le médecin / consulter un médecinJe dois consulter un médecin.
visit briefly / drop bypasser voir quelqu’unJe passerai vous voir demain.
visit a property before rentingvisiter un appartementOn a visité deux appartements.
visit regularlyaller souvent voir / rendre souvent visite àElle va souvent voir sa sœur.

Consulter un site emphasises looking for information. Aller sur un site is the ordinary action of going to a website. A marketing button may still use Visitez notre site, but it is not the only or always the most natural choice in a sentence.

What mistakes do English speakers often make?

Incorrect in everyday standard French: Je visite mes amis demain.
Natural: Je rends visite à mes amis demain. / Je vais voir mes amis demain.

Incorrect: Nous visitons à Bordeaux.
Correct: Nous visitons Bordeaux.
Visiter takes the place directly.

The person follows à, so use an indirect object pronoun.

Final recap

For an everyday learner-friendly rule, use visiter directly with a place: visiter Paris, un musée, un appartement. Use rendre visite à with a person, and replace that person with lui or leur. In conversation, aller voir quelqu’un is often just as natural. For websites, doctors and brief stops, choose the expression that describes the real action rather than translating English “visit” automatically.

Frequently asked questions

Can you say visiter quelqu’un?

It exists in specialised, older and regional uses, but it is not the usual choice for a social visit in standard contemporary French. Say rendre visite à quelqu’un or aller voir quelqu’un.

Why is it lui rendre visite, not le rendre visite?

The expression is rendre visite à quelqu’un. Because the person is introduced by à, French uses the indirect object pronoun lui or leur.

Does visiter need à before a place?

No. The place follows directly: visiter Rome, visiter un musée. Use aller à Rome when you simply mean going there, without the idea of exploring it.
