Quel vs Lequel in French: How Do You Choose?

Quel and lequel can both translate as “which,” but they do not occupy the same place in a sentence. The noun that follows—or does not follow—is usually the clue you need.

Quick answer: use quel directly before a noun: Quel livre ? Use lequel when the noun is already known and you mean “which one?”: Lequel préfères-tu ?

What is the simple difference between quel and lequel?

QUEL
+ noun
Quel restaurant ?
versus
LEQUEL
replaces the noun
Lequel ?

Quel is an interrogative adjective: it describes a noun and therefore comes with that noun. Lequel is an interrogative pronoun: it stands in place of a noun that the context has already identified.

How do you use quel before a noun?

Use quel when the noun appears immediately after it or remains part of the same noun group. Like an adjective, it agrees with that noun in gender and number.

English often uses “what” where French uses quel. Do not choose between quel and lequel by translating “what” or “which” alone. Look at the French structure.

How do you use lequel to mean “which one”?

Use lequel when the choices are already visible, already mentioned or obvious from the situation. The pronoun replaces the noun, but it still agrees with it.

Can you say quel without a noun?

Not when it means “which one.” If the noun disappears, you normally need the corresponding form of lequel.

What happens to lequel after à or de?

Some forms contract with à and de, just as à + le becomes au and de + le becomes du.

These contracted forms are also used as relative pronouns in more advanced sentences, but the basic logic is the same: the form agrees with the noun it replaces.
