French grammar explained
Entendre vs Écouter in French: What’s the Difference?
Both entendre and écouter are connected to hearing, but they describe two different experiences. One happens to your ears; the other is something you choose to do.
What is the difference between entendre and écouter?
The simplest test is intention. If the sound simply reaches your ears, use entendre. If you direct your attention toward it, use écouter. This is close to the English contrast between “hear” and “listen.”
| Verb | Core idea | Typical translation | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| entendre | Perceiving a sound | to hear | J’entends de la musique. |
| écouter | Paying attention to a sound | to listen / listen to | J’écoute de la musique. |
The two example sentences may describe the same music, but not the same action. J’entends de la musique means that music is audible. J’écoute de la musique means that listening to it is your activity.
When do you use entendre in French?
Use entendre when you perceive a sound, voice or noise. You may notice it suddenly, hear it from another room or fail to hear it clearly.
J’entends un bruit dans la cuisine.
I can hear a noise in the kitchen.
Je ne t’entends pas bien.
I can’t hear you very well.
Tu as entendu ce qu’elle a dit ?
Did you hear what she said?
Entendre can also mean “to understand”
In some formal or fixed uses, entendre means “to understand” or “to mean.” This is different from ordinary physical hearing.
Qu’entendez-vous par là ?
What do you mean by that?
J’entends bien votre argument.
I understand your argument perfectly well.
In everyday conversation, however, comprendre remains the most direct verb for “to understand”: Je comprends.
When do you use écouter in French?
Use écouter when someone intentionally listens to music, a podcast, a teacher, another person or any sound. Attention is the central idea.
J’écoute un podcast en français.
I’m listening to a podcast in French.
Écoute-moi, c’est important.
Listen to me, this is important.
Elle écoute les oiseaux le matin.
She listens to the birds in the morning.
Écouter can also mean that you follow advice or obey someone: Tu devrais écouter ton médecin — “You should listen to your doctor.”
Why is it écouter quelqu’un, without à?
This is a common English-speaking learner mistake. English says “listen to someone,” but French uses écouter directly, without a preposition.
| Avoid | Natural French | English |
|---|---|---|
| J’écoute à Marie. | J’écoute Marie. | I’m listening to Marie. |
| Écoute à ton professeur. | Écoute ton professeur. | Listen to your teacher. |
| Nous écoutons à la radio. | Nous écoutons la radio. | We’re listening to the radio. |
Do you say entendre parler or écouter parler?
Entendre parler de means “to hear about”: J’ai entendu parler de ce restaurant. Entendre quelqu’un parler means that you hear someone speaking. Écouter quelqu’un parler means that you actively listen while the person speaks.
J’ai entendu Paul parler dans le couloir.
I heard Paul speaking in the hallway.
J’ai écouté Paul parler de son projet.
